This attractive restaurant is impossible for anyone hoping to talk with friends as the music, fine in its way, ia amplified to total disaster. This means the noise level is quite unacceptable and, so far as the music goes, it is a shame. The amplification reduces the range of the sound so what once was attractive becomes a wretched blare.
Reluctantly we left in order to converse which is why we met. We might come back next summer when we can sit utside and only be disturbed by the clanging of Lenox Avenue.

Cassoulet was not available but I was not told before the order was sent to kitchen
The wine we chose was not available
The waitress charged (prepaid) 20% tip because we order a bottle of wine for 2???
Desserts were awful
Definitely not recommending this place

DElightful restaurant with an international ambiance. Fine food served by a competent and friendly staff. The single drawback is the loudness of the piped-in music. Makes intelligent conversation difficult which is odd as this is the sort of place talkers might like to hang out. My dinner companions said it is better in the summer when one can dine out on the sidewalk.

Excellent food, fun decor, wonderful staff. I was having an early dinner with a friend to catch up. When we came in, the music was fun but loud enough to impede conversation. The staff turned it down two notches -- loud enough to provide good ambience but not loud enough to make diners shout. Overall, the service was excellent and this is a fun spot in the heart of historic Harlem.
I had the crepe chevre epinard, which was wonderful. My friend had a vegetable plate, adjusted slightly to meet her dietary preferences. Again, gracious accommodation from the wait staff and kitchen.
It was too humid to take advantage of the outdoor cafe but the tables there looked very inviting.

My friends and I had a very fun brunch at Chez Lucienne, which was marred only by the fact that it took over an hour for us to get our food. There were seven of us, but no one ordered anything hugely complicated, and many nearby tables of 4 or 5 people ordered after us and received their food so much before us that they were finishing as we received ours. When we addressed the delay with our waitress ("we've been waiting an hour for our food"), she checked with the kitchen and came back to inform us that in fact, it had only been 36 minutes since the ticket was added to the system. Honestly, with a table of hungry people, correcting them probably isn't the right approach! And it still took another 20 minutes or so before our food arrived.
That said, the food was great, the atmosphere was fun, and we definitely got our money's worth on $20 all-you-can-drink mimosas while we waited. Also, the waitress wound up giving us three free desserts at the end of the meal, which was a nice gesture -- especially because it wasn't her fault. Fun neighborhood spot!

We made a 6pm reservation prior to attending a concert at the Apollo. Early dinner is probably good, because as we were leaving, it got crowded and a little noisier. However, overall it was a very good experience and good value. Our waiter, Anthony, was wonderful. He's an asset to the restaurant.
Won't be going back anytime soon
A group of friends and I had dinner at this restaurant on Friday evening after receiving a suggestion we check it out. Another friend of mine had previously raved about the great food. Upon arriving to the restaurant and being seated, our waitress walked by several times and did not take even a drink order. I had to finally order a glass of wine from the manager after sitting there more than 30 minutes. We had to ask three different times just to get bread on the table, and our food took more than 45 minutes. After finishing our meals (which were good but nothing spectacular) we had to ask twice for the dessert menu. My friend finally got up and walked up to the manager and grabbed the menus himself. Although the waiter comped the dessert as an apology, I don't think it was enough. Not worth going back any time soon.
Great find!
We live in Harlem but it took a rainy day to get us to Chez Lucienne for lunch. Cannot find anything to fault. The classic dishes- frisse salad with poached egg, mussels dijonaisse, onion soup, steak frites-- were both traditional and somehow new. The wait person was well informed and attentive. We will be back often.
A Gem in Harlem
Honestly, my group initially attempted to dine at Red Rooster, simply because it was more well-known. However, due to RR's unavailability on Saturday night, we made a reservation next door at Chez Lucienne instead. So glad we did! A few people in our group were Vegetarians, so there were ample delicious options of veg and non-veg menu items. The waiters were extremely personable, as they entertained us with brief French lessons. The lobster ravioli was the best I've ever had. Will definitely come back!
Disappointing trend
I had brunch at chez lucienne not too long ago and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. I took my in laws back for dinner two months later to show off. It backfired.
Apparently the restaurant changed management and menus. The service was rude and the food was sub par. Not terrible but nothing exciting. Things were heavily seasoned and over cooked. Fried calamari tasted like it came from a freezer. Dessert was tasty it not worth the price.
Overall I was extremely disappointed but I had the restaurant on a high pedestal.
Pleasant surprise
The decor was more casual than anticipated, but that was not a problem at all. Very good food, well prepared. My wife's salmon was outstanding and my French onion soup was very good as was the lobster ravioli. My wife's salad was disappointing - just a lot of lettuce. However, the prix fixe menu was a good deal at $25.95 per person; the service was very pleasant and reasonably attentive; and they got us in and out in plenty of time for our show at The Apollo. We will remember Chez Lucienne warmly and would happily consider dining there again for another event in he area.
French Bistro Classics in a Neighborhood Gem
Chez Lucienne is the sort of place you should always have in your go-to list. Reliable French bistro classics--escargot, moules frites, steak frites--served with a friendly neighborhood feel in Harlem. The restaurant is always busy, but not insanely so and the prices are very wallet-friendly for NYC.
During our last visit, we ordered merguez and escargot as appetizers and both were very good. My main was a pan-seared trout with a lemon-butter sauce that was dynamite! Solid wine list with many bottles under $50.
A reliable standby in terms of food and service. Highly recommended.
